Job Summary

As a member of the Chief Information Officer's leadership team, the Chief Enterprise Architect will provide vision and leadership for the strategic development and management of the Enterprise Architecture organization with focus on building solutions that maximize use of emerging technologies to transform Stanford HealthCare's business to achieve superior value and scalability. This individual will also participate, as a member of the senior management team, in ensuring that SHC objectives are achieved, risks are managed and the organization's resources are used responsibly relative to technology solutions.

Chief Enterprise Architect will provide architectural strategy and leadership to developing and implementing enterprise architecture initiatives that improve IT cost effectiveness, service quality and innovation in a constantly changing and competitive marketplace. In addition, the individual will be responsible to maintain up-to-date knowledge of health care technology standards, industry trends and emerging technologies and related practices. In parallel with the needs of the clinical mission of SHC, the Chief Enterprise Architect will need to understand and anticipate the needs of the research and education missions of Stanford Medicine broadly and work in close partnership with the technology leadership of Stanford University.

Supervisory responsibilities include leading the Enterprise Architecture Governance team and managing the Enterprise Architecture Services and system integration teams to deliver strategic capabilities across the enterprise.

Overall Architecture Leadership
Provide architectural vision, innovation and leadership to developing and implementing enterprise architecture initiatives that enable the organizations IT strageies, improve IT cost effectiveness, service quality and innovation in a constantly changing and competitive marketplace
Partner with IT leadership in providing providing strategic vision, standards definition, and planning for cross-platform technology stacks including storage, networking, mobility, location-based services, internet of things, application delivery/presentation, biometrics, consumer digital and tele health. This includes overseeing the development of enterprise standards and a reference architecture including the plan to migrate to that architecture.
Working with portfolio leaders, initiate and deliver technology evaluations and recommendations, including but not limited to performing a key role in evaluating Buy vs. Build, Data Center vs. Cloud decisions and other critical choices in our infrastructure.
Design solutions that can meet the needs of an operational health care system and a world-class biomedical research enterprise that is technology intensive and on the leading edge of innovation.
Information System & Technology Architecture
Cultivate relationships with IT Leadership and bring thought leadership including architectural and strategic advice in the areas of IT Strategy, emerging technologies, architecture principles, technology lifecycles and best practices.
Develop and maintain architectural blueprints that address current state challenges and a roadmap to achieve a target Future State.
Provide analysis of architectural gaps in the organization.
Communicate architectural decisions, plans, goals and strategies.
Gain organizational commitment for enterprise level architecture and infrastructure initiatives.
Provide architectural direction to Enterprise Architects, Business Architects and Solution Architects.
Develop architectural metrics and reports for the executive team, business and IT management
Architectural Programs & Initiatives
Initiate and deliver architectural programs that align IT with business strategy.
Deliver requisite program documentation including program charters, schedules, requirements documents, specifications, design documents and testing strategies
Partner with Chief Analytics officer to design and implement the future anaylytics infrastrucute and data architecture
Partner with IT Leadership team to create a plan to integrate business systems and workflows in support of the future organizational strategy
Architecture Consultancy
Maintain in-depth knowledge of IT industry best practices, technologies, architectures and emerging technologies.
Provide architectural consulting to programs, projects and initiatives.
Act as the focal point for enterprise architecture and IT standards.
Teach and coach on architecture principles and standards.
Architectural Governance
Develop, communicate and deploy Enterprise Architecture Governance processes.
Develop and communicate enterprise technology standards and policies.
Review new and existing program/project architecture for compliance with IT standards, policies and architectural plans.
Review IT procurement plans for compliance with IT standards and architectural plans.
Document exceptions to architectural standards.
Ensure that project documentation captures significant architectural decisions.
Ensure that architectural governance is a fair, consistent and transparent process.
Identify architectural risks and propose alternatives and solutions.
Architecture Processes & Tools
Develop, communicate and deploy Enterprise Architecture processes.
Deploy and maintain an Enterprise Architecture repository and tool set.
Perform annual architectural maturity assessments.
Produce regular architecture status reports.
Program Management
Partner with PMO and IT Business Councils to review and approve solution estimates, evaluate technology opportunities and develop technology roadmaps to meet long term business objectives.
Perform budget and cost management for the Enterprise Architecture Services team and for individual projects under Chief Architects purview
Responsible for setting goals for the Enterprise Architecture Services team and individual performance assessment and improvement plans (as applicable)
Provide leadership by establishing department and individual objectives.
Establish and maintain an overall resource plan.
Create a culture of forward thinking and innovation.
Coach and counsel employee and suppliers to maximize performance.

Minimum Qualifications

Bachelor's degree in a work-related discipline/field from an accredited college or university

Ten (10) years of progressively responsible and directly related work experience with at least 7+ years in a multi-entity, complex environment

Ability to lead the organization through design, development and deployment following leading solution delivery processes
Knowledge of multiple technical platforms, operating systems, databases and development languages including but not limited to Vendor-developed solutions, Web, UNIX/Linux, Virtualization, and Mobile. Health care experience with Epic, strong understanding of FHIR / HL7 standards a plus
Must have worked within a multi-disciplined, cross-functional technical organization with matrixes reporting relationship
Strong oral and written interpersonal skills with the proven ability to influence and achieve alignment across a range of different opinions and interests.
Proven ability to builds and sustains excellent relationships at multiple levels in the work place.
Demonstratec ability to coach and mentoring key IT leaders across the IT organization to help the IT organization adopt standards and develop new technologies, processes and skills.
Experience with the development, ownership, and successful delivery of an enterprise wide technology architecture plan that has achieved application simplification and standardization. A team player, the successful candidate will need to effectively drive change through influence and collaboration with both IT and business stakeholders. The ideal candidate should be comfortable dealing with both senior business stakeholders and technical IT teams.
This position requires expert knowledge of designing and implementing enterprise architecture, using all aspects of service-oriented architecture and common governance processes across application and infrastructure portfolios. A deep understanding of business and technology archtiectures. Leading programs using best practices and contemporary technologies.
Demonstrates the ability to build the business case for recommendations with the communication skills, political sensitivity, patience and persuasiveness to achieve consensus
Can demonstrate success in applying technology in ways that provide differentiation around customer experience and clinical care delivery
Possesses a solid understanding of both technology and business, and expertise in aligning the two
Is current on technology trends and solutions; for example, cloud computing, security across businesses and devices, business intelligence tools and applications, mobile computing, video, and location based services
Hands on experience developing and implementing Web technologies, Micro Services, Restful APIs, Integration/Middleware technologies, and real-time Complex Event Processing would be a plus
Experience with ETL technologies, SQL and No SQL databases, EDW and Vitualization tools would be an advantage
