Elvira W.

Elvira has spent 29 years as an RN in the North Intensive Care Unit, where she treats patients recovering from heart and lung surgery. She attributes her success in the high-pressure environment of the Department partly to her upbringing in the Philippines. “In our culture, you don’t argue with your older siblings; you’re supposed to do what they tell you. You can’t fight them, so you just have to work with them.” This diplomatic approach to solving problems has served her well in the intense atmosphere of the Department where collaboration between team members is essential. As she says, “The idea is that improving collaboration will ultimately improve patient care.”
